They say, “All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast” and I believe that from the bottom of my heart & sole. In my opinion a breakfast is incomplete without fresh bread, butter, egg and bacon and a cup of good coffee. Even those names are making me salivating; alas! My stupid doctor & his bloody diet!
I’m allowed to have a grand breakfast but only healthy one. Not to mention my views are never same with my doc when it comes to a healthy choice. But who can win an argument with such bossy people? I had no other choice but munching those ‘healthy’ meals since past few weeks.
Today I’ve chosen a favorite Indian snack item on my breakfast menu: Poha (in Hindi) or Chindé (in Bengali) or flattened rice. In Maharashtra this is more known as Batata & Kanda Poha. It is a popular breakfast & snack item among the street foods of Maharashtra. Even there is a song named “Kande Pohe” in a Marathi Movie.
Wow I’ve written the story and even entertained you all with a song. And now it’s time for the simple recipe.

Potato, small: 2, cut into cubes
Onion: small: 2, finely chopped
Green peas: 1/3 cup
Green chilies: 3-4, finely chopped
Coriander leaves: 2 tbsp. finely chopped
Lime juice: 1 tbsp
Nigella seeds/ Onion seeds/ Kalonji/ Kalo jeera: 1 tsp Or, black mustard seeds: 1 tsp
Turmeric powder: ½ tsp + ½ tsp
Red chili powder: ½ tsp
Peanut: ¼ cup
Oil: 2-3 tbsp (any cooking oil can be used)
Sugar: 1 tbsp
Salt to taste
To Serve:
Lime wedges
Thinly sliced green chilies: 1 tsp (if you prefer it Hot)
Shredded coconut: 2 tbsp (optional)
Fresh coriander leaves: 2 tsp
Sev: 1/4 cup (optional)
Equipment:
Large Non-stick frying pan
Preparation:
Heat 1 tbsp of oil in the frying pan and fry peanuts on medium flame until peanuts turn into brown color; don’t burn. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towel to get rid of excess oil.
In the same oil add cubes of potatoes with ½ tsp of turmeric powder, pinch of sugar and salt. Fry them on medium flame until they turn into golden brown color and nicely done. Add 1 tsp of oil if necessary. Remove potatoes with the slotted spoon and keep aside.
Add rest of the oil in the same pan and heat until oil is smoking hot. Add the sliced green chilies and nigella seeds (or mustard seeds; whichever you are using) in the hot oil and allow spluttering. Add chopped onion and sauté for 1 min or until onion is slightly translucent but still crunchy.
Add green peas and sauté. Also add turmeric and chili powder along with sugar and salt.
Give the flattened rice a quick wash and drain excess water. Dump it straight in to the frying pan. Make sure to wash them very quickly otherwise it will be mushy and lumpy. Stir quickly to incorporate everything. Avoid making them mushy again.
Add previously cooked potatoes and fried peanuts. Give it a quick stir. Finally add finely chopped coriander leaves with lime juice and switch off the flame. Stir gently and here goes your pan off the stove.
Transfer immediately to the serving bowls. Sprinkle shredded coconut, additional coriander leaves, and green chilies on the top and lime wedges on the side.
Always serve this Batata Kanda Poha or Flattened Rice with potato and Onion hot with a small bowl of sev. Poha will not taste as good as hot when cold. It is also not a good idea to store for later consumption as flattened rice tends to get little chewy when cold.
Enjoy with a hot cup of spicy Indian milk tea.
