Good food is like fresh air to any foodie while bad food feels like suffocating. And I am suffering due to my odd location as it makes difficult for me to reach out good restaurants on regular basis. Not to mention I don’t get the chance to enjoy home delivery very often too (I need to change my location ASAP). Then there are few good people who have agreed to home delivery us happiness. The Great Punjab is one of them. It has been around a year I’m enjoying their food on home delivery and I’m quite happy with the quality they deliver. So last weekend when I couldn’t find the menu to place the order, we decided to hop in there. Initially I liked the place at first glance but later with their service I thought I should’ve stayed with home delivery. Anyways here is my (dine in) experience at ‘The Great Punjab’.
Ambiance:
The restaurant is quite big and spacious with wooden décor and sitting arrangements (don’t worry cozy sofas are also there for people like me). The ambiance is quite nice to give you a warm welcome. Especially I liked the wooden staircase and the glass partition which is separating it from the main entrance. This place has a good bar counter at the end of the place (luckily we got my table near it; happy me). I noticed a hanging LCD in front of me but it was switched when the cricket match is actually going on; may be people come here to dine not to watch cricket.
Food:
Tequila Sunrise
Tequila sunrise is a very well-known cocktail so nothing special about it except it was bit on sweet end.
Entrée:
Fish Finger
In my opinion this Fish Finger is the best thing that comes out from ‘The Great Punjab’s kitchen. Breaded and deep fried thin slices of fish are absolutely divine. I can go there just because of these little fish fingers. And mild sweet yogurt dip makes just perfect combo with them.
Main:
Kabuli Nan
Are you a sweet paratha lover? Then it is the thing for you. Unfortunately it was big turn down for me. This big buttered Nan had shredded beetroot and cottage cheese (that’s all I could taste there)and very few nuts on top. There was no seasoning at all in topping except sugary syrup and it tasted more like dessert pizza to me.
Chicken Peshawari
Shredded chicken is cooked in thick rich gravy, garnished with coriander and presented as Chicken Peshawari. It is one of those common dishes which most of the Indian restaurants serve. Nothing is great or bad about this to comment. Though we were told this is a spicy chicken gravy, I found this flavorful dish has slight sweet note and Not spicy at all. Then again they dint inform us about the shredded chicken. I think the customers should know about the dish and it’s a responsibility of the waiter to inform them if there is anything special/different from the regular gravy items(when it is not mentioned/described in the menu). It’s not that I dint like the shredded chicken but I like to be informed before you serve (hey, it’s just a thought of mine).
Vegetable Pulao
Vegetable Pulao is another common dish in Indian cuisine. The rice is fragrant and flavorful, full of julienned vegetables & peas. Seasoning is perfect, always.
Service:
If I ever get frustrated with this restaurant then their poor service would be the one & only cause for it. I’m enjoying their food on home delivery for more than a year but totally disappointed with their service on the restaurant. It is a shock to me; from the quality of food I had very high expectation on them. First of all, the waiter didn’t care to inform us that the Nan is sweet in taste. Secondly the fish finger was served without the dip and we had to ask for it. Then again they dint ask us whether or not to serve the rice; they just waited for us to finish the Nan. I simply deny accepting this kind of service from a expensive restaurant like this.
Pros:
Good food,
Spacious sitting arrangement,
Location.
Cons:
Service,
Cost.
Cost:
Cost for two people 2200 INR (cocktail + entrée + main + tax).
Verdict:
As the quality of the food is good, I’ll probably stick to the home delivery option unless I’m in mind to stretch my legs.
