We all have that childhood memories of attending Rath Yatra and visiting a nearby fair on our way back. We had our attractions, our reasons to be there with our family. Some of us were there because of devotion, some were dragged by parents/cousins, some were interested in the fair.
I was neither of them; all I was interested in piping hot Beguni and Sabu Papad which were always on sale in parade of Rath Yatra and in the fair.
My grandfather knew my secret desire for and worked with it as a weapon to make me to attend the parade. All I wished to have a thonga-bhora muri with chanachur (paperbag full of puffed rice with mixed fried goodies) along with crispy Beguni so I was never bothered about where I had to go. And on our way back he used to buy me paper fans in compensation of not allowing me to blow the ‘bhnepu‘ (whistle), he never liked that high pitched sound anyway.
After my grandfather passed away my father picked up my weakness soon and lured me to our local Rath Yatra where he always took part in carrying the chariot (rath). I was already grown-up enough to understand the reason behind this bribe, he wanted me to accompany him, to spend some quality time.
I didn’t need beguni or muri anymore but we shared our ‘we time’ with cha from roadside tea vendors along with ‘projapoti biskut’ (palmier).
Now after decades all those memories are suddenly resurfacing while I’m frying Beguni. Human brain circuit, huh!
