Homemade Baked Tater Tots or Eggless Potato Bites

I guess I’m a born late riser which always results in a rush at my home in the morning time. Due to my bad ass when I open my eyes most of the people around me are already off to their jobs. But I’m not allowed to afford the luxury of relaxing for the rest of the day on regular basis. But once a while I get those days when I feel like a queen and sip cups full of tea all day long. My simple luxury of life during monsoon. I love to spend those lazy rainy days on my balcony with a pot (not a cup only) of hot tea and some spicy homemade snacks.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to afford this kind of luxury. The Monday blue in my mind and the rain outside extended the ‘thing’ a step ahead. I wasn’t in mood to go to the kitchen but also I had nothing to have with tea. So I thought to make some fresh tater tots which tastes absolutely divine with my spicy tea. Being a lazy bum I had no intention to fry those tater tots by standing hrs in front of the stove top. So I simply baked them. Thus they became healthy with no oil.

For those who has no idea what Tater tots are: Tater tots are fried small cylindrical potato bites which is a hot favorite snack in American cuisine. Traditionally thin grated potatoes are seasoned and shaped in small cylinders and they are deep fried and served, But in this Homemade Baked Tater tots processed seasoned smashed potatoes are shaped & coated with potato chips then baked in oven.

Here is the simple recipe of Baked Tater Tots.

Preparation Time: 15 mins

Cooking Time: 15 mins

Resting Time: 0 mins

Total Time: 30 mins

Yield: 2 dozens

Ingredients:

Potato: 4 (large)

Potato chips: 150g

Butter: 2 tbsp, at room temperature Or, Cheddar cheese: 2 tbsp

Red chili powder: 1 tbsp

Ground black pepper: 1 tsp (optional)

Parmesan cheese: 3 tbsp (optional)
Salt to taste

Equipments:

Non-stick Baking pan

Large mixing bowl

Small oven proof bowl

Medium mixing bowl

Preparation:

Wash and clean the potatoes. Pat them dry with kitchen towel. Pierce the potatoes with a fork vigorously. Bake them in microwave for 5 mins on High (900W). Flip them and continue baking 4 mins more at same temperature. Allow the potatoes to cool down until they are cold enough to handle. Peel the potatoes and place them in a large mixing bowl. Smash the potatoes while they are still warm.

Melt butter in a small bowl and mix it with the smashed potatoes. If you are using mozzarella cheese, use them at this point. Smash the potatoes again with butter/cheese until the mixture is smooth and lump free.

Add salt, grounded black pepper. Adjust seasoning.

Add red chili powder and one final smash until everything is incorporated.

Take 2 tbsp of smashed potatoes, roll them into a cylinder. Do the same with rest of the smashed potato. Crush the potato chips into crumbs by using food processor. Take the crumbled chips in a bowl and roll the potato cylinders in it.

Preheat the oven to 180⁰C. Spray the baking pans with cooking oil. Arrange the tater tots in baking pan. Sprinkle little Parmesan cheese on top of tater tots and bake them at 180⁰C for 15 mins or until the color turns to golden brown.

Remove from oven immediately and serve hot with tomato ketchup or any hot sauce.

Hi! I'm interested in making this recipe for my daughter but have a question. What exactly are the chips needed for? Do they serve as a filler/binder? If so, is there something else I could substitute for the chips? Thanks!

Hi Tyler,
chips are for making the crust. A little crunch for your snack. You can use crushed cornflakes or breadcrumbs as well instead of the chips.
